Back To School
August 31, 2006
Parents sometimes minimize how stressful the return to school can be for kids. Imagine yourself in this scenario: You’ve been away from your job for three months, and now you have to go back to work full-time after twelve weeks of relaxing, playing, and doing whatever you want to do. That’s stressful. And it’s even more difficult for young people if they’re switching schools within

the same district or moving to a new place altogether. If returning to school coincides with a divorce, a death, a relocation, or the dramatic changes that come with puberty, going back to school can be particularly stressful.
Kids are remarkably resilient when it comes to coping with such situations. But what can parents do to ease the transition? Most importantly, you should be available when your children want to talk.issadeeb.net It might be late at night, or while you’re cooking dinner, but you have to be available on their terms and schedule.

Avoid Morning Madness
August 27, 2006
Mornings are rushed, what with finding a suitable work outfit, eating breakfast, getting the kids to school and jumping through the bath – all before 8 a.m. There are things you can do to start the day off on the right foot.
Wake to soothing music. Set a radio alarm on Fine Music Radio. A screeching alarm gives you a nasty shock and who wants to start the day pumping with adrenalin?
Have breakfast. This sets the tone for your eating for the rest of the day. Without having had breakfast, you probably won’t be able to resist the doughnut trolley at 11 a.m. and then you won’t be hungry at lunchtime. Get the picture?
Eat something fresh. Have a banana or an apple or at least some fruit juice. Starting the day in a healthy way is good for body and soul. Eating fresh fruit is always better for you than drinking a multivitamin.

Hormones and Ageing
August 26, 2006
Specific hormones may play a key role in longevity and healthy ageing, two new studies suggest.
Researchers found one hormone, adiponectin, at higher-than-average concentrations in 100-year-old women, while another study found that stimulating the body’s production of growth hormone brought a youthful pep back to people in their 60s to 80s.
Both studies were presented Wednesday at the 6th International Congress of Neuroendocrinology, in Pittsburgh.
How the research was conducted
In the first study, Dr Agnieszka Baranowska-Bik and colleagues from the University of Poland studied 133 women from 20 to 102 years of age, including 25 women who were 100 to 102 years old. The researchers were particularly interested in the women’s levels of adiponectin.

Additives in Meat and Poultry Products

History of Food Additives
In prehistoric times, cavemen may have smoked meats to make them taste better. In coastal regions, early man probably soaked foods, including meat and poultry, in seawater for better flavor and for preservation. The spice trade between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe flourished because the public demanded the flavors that spices added to foods. Early explorers went in search of salt and spices, and wealthy Romans were kidnaped for ransom of salt and spices. Our ancestors discovered that large amounts of sugar helped preserve fruits.

Classroom Cleaning
August 25, 2006
How do you get children to pick up toys and clean up after themselves? Each
provider has a bag of tricks. Here are some ideas.
- KEEP THE AREA NEAT. If everything has a place, picking up isn’t so hard. Children develop a sense of order when they live in an organized environment.
- MAKE A GAME OUT OF PICKING UP TOYS. Putting things back in their places can give the same joy as working a puzzle. Some children don’t even know that picking up is a dreaded chore
- PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF. Example is a good teacher. You don’t even have to talk. They get the idea just by being around you.

Everything about an Egg
August 19, 2006
For many years, eggs have gotten a bad rap as a forbidden food because of their cholesterol content. The mere mention of cholesterol conjured up fear and was enough to banish eggs entirely from
the diets of many people. No cholesterol was the most important benefit trumpeted in advertising and on the labels of many food products. Today, thanks to years of research, we know more than ever about the relationship between diet, lifestyle and good health. There is growing evidence that diet and health relationships are a function of both what is in the diet and what is missing from it.
