Strange Creature: Immune to Pain

January 31, 2008

As vulnerable as naked mole rats seem, researchers now find the hairless, bucktoothed rodents are invulnerable to the

pain of acid and the sting of chili peppers.

A better understanding of pain resistance in these sausage-like creatures could lead to new drugs for people with chronic pain, scientists added.

Naked mole rats live in cramped, oxygen-starved burrows some six feet underground in central East Africa. Unusually, they are cold-blooded ? which, as far as anyone knows, is unique among mammals.

“They’re the nicest, sweetest animals I’ve ever worked with ? they look frightening, but they’re very gentle,” said neurobiologist Thomas Park at the University of Illinois at Chicago

Scientists knew the mole rats were quite sensitive to touch ? perhaps to help replace their almost useless eyes. After probing their skin, Park and his colleagues unexpectedly discovered the rodents lacked the chemical Substance P, which causes the feeling of burning pain in mammals.

2003: ‘Shoe bomber’ jailed for life

A US judge has sentenced British-born “shoe bomber” Richard Reid to life in prison after he tried to blow up a transatlantic flight from Paris to Miami.
Reid was unrepentant throughout the 90-minute hearing in which he received the maximum sentence on each of the eight counts faced by Judge William Young.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment on three of the charges - attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and two counts of interfering with a flight crew.

Reid was also given an additional 20 years each for attempted homicide, attempted murder, planting an explosive device on an aircraft, and attempted destruction of an aircraft - plus 30 years for using a destructive device in relation to a crime of violence.

The total of 110 years of imprisonment in addition to the life sentences was more than the prosecution had requested.

Trying Out the Cheeseburger in a Can

January 31, 2008

About the cheeseburger in a can which I posted earlier, someone actually bought one and tried it out. Here’s what he has to say as quoted from Something Awful:

It tastes… not so good. Very bland, kind of like pre-made tomato sauce and a bitter aftertaste. The lower bun got kinda soggy, which really lowered the overall experience. I’m not sick and I say I would eat this thing again if it weren’t so expensive. And I really must say that this probably is faaaar better when you’re many kilometers away from civilization on top of some mountain and you can whip out a cheeseburger with nearly the same quality as a McDonald’s cheeseburger while your friend eats dry bread or power bars.
